Christ himself is said, when only eight years old, to have gone to the temple at Jerusalem, and disputed with the Rabbis, listening to them and asking them questions: whence it may be inferred as they could not have known that he was the Son of God, since general publicity was not given to that circumstance till many years afterwards , that it was customary for the priests and Rabbis to teach children who came to the temple, by discoursing to them of matters of Jewish faith and doctrine. And that it was also a custom for children perpetually to serve in the temple we know from the history of Samuel, who waited on Eli the high priest; of whom it is said, in the eighteenth verse of the second chapter of the First Book of Samuel, "But Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child, girded with a linen ephod. Amongst the Jews all wars, not excepting their civil wars, bore a religious character for even in civil war right must exist on one side ; and in the twentieth chapter of Deuteronomy directions are given to the priests to accompany and exhort the soldiers to battle.
